Your best customer may have come from ChatGPT – and you’d never know.

Imagine this:

A potential customer hears about your company.

Before contacting you, they ask ChatGPT:

“Who are the best companies for this?”

“How does this company compare with its competitors?”

“What should I look for before hiring someone?”

“Is this service worth the money?”

AI helps them research the problem, compare their options and become comfortable with their decision.

They eventually type your website address into their browser and schedule a call.

Your analytics records it as direct traffic.

Your CRM may credit the salesperson.

Your reporting may attribute the sale to branded search.

But AI may have done much of the work that moved the customer toward you.

So who deserves the credit?

The Interactive Advertising Bureau is now developing a framework for measuring AI’s influence on conversions.

It is an important step because traditional attribution was built around trackable clicks, cookies and referral paths.

AI recommendations often leave none of those behind.

That creates a significant problem.

If businesses cannot see how AI influences buying decisions, they may:

Invest in the wrong channels

Cut content that is quietly driving consideration

Miscalculate their actual return on marketing

Underestimate the importance of appearing in AI-generated answers

Give credit to the final click instead of what actually created the decision

This is why AI visibility is becoming about much more than “ranking in ChatGPT.”

Businesses need to understand:

Whether AI mentions them

How AI describes them

Which competitors it recommends

What information influences those recommendations

Companies may also need to start asking their customers a better question.

Not simply:

“How did you hear about us?”

But:

“What helped you decide to contact us?”

Those are no longer the same question.

And if the answer is no, how confident are you that your marketing reports are telling you the complete story?
